| The Surf City Yacht Club hosted the Long Beach Island Yacht Racing
Association's Race Week this past week. The regatta is for the LBIYRA championship
in the classes sailed here on LBI. The LBIYRA is made up of yacht clubs
on LBI, Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club, Spray Beach Yacht Club, The Haven
Beach Asociation, Brant Beach Yacht Club, Surf City Yacht Club, Barnegat
Light Club and Brigantine Yacht Club. The regatta was sailed over a span
of five days with different classes sailing on different days. Each LBI
club had at least one champion!
The first day of competition was on Wednesday when the junior singlehanded classes raced. The weather was perfect with a steady breeze all day. The largest fleet of the regatta was the Optimist. Ian Todd from LEHYC won the first place overall and the red fleet. Todd won three races and finished second twice in the five race series. Tauthal MacColgain from SCYC finished second overall and won the blue fleet. Mike Reynolds from LEHYC finished first in the white fleet. Also raising on the first day were the Sunfish and Laser Radials. Samantha Sutter won the Laser Radial class from SCYC by winning three races. Also winning from SCYC was Siaghal MacColgain who won four races on his way to the Sunfish Championship. On Friday the Club 420s sailed their championship in light air. Kyle Kovacs and Eric Reitinger of BBYC topped the ten-boat fleet. Saturday was another busy day for the race committee as four fleets sailed on one course. It was a beautiful day but the winds were very shifty. Two different types of Cat boats competed. The larger of the two was the Sanderling and J.B. Maschal from LEHYC took top honors with two first places. The other Cat class was the Sandpiper that was won by Bill Clarke from BLYC. In the Lightning class a different person won each race but Jack Elfman of SCYC prevailed to win the championship. SCYC's Terry Moulton won the last two races to take the title in the Mariner Class. On Sunday the senior single-handed championships were sailed in a
steady breeze. Dick Saunders from SBYC won the Sunfish and Rich Warren
of SCYC won the Lasers.
