| Teams skippered by Jack Elfman and Jack Huntsman were the top
two Shore entries in the Lightning North American Championships at Annapolis,
Md., last week.
Elfman, Surf City Yacht Club, with his crew consisting of his wife Cindy and Mike Holly, finished in 13th place out of 36 entries in the Championship Fleet on Chesapeake Bay. Huntsman, from the Monmouth Boat Club, Red Bank, with sons John and Bobby serving as crew, finished in 20th place. A team skippered by Ched Proctor, representing the Connecticut-Rhode Island District, won the North American Lightning title. In the Presidents Cup, a team headed by Brian Taboada, Island Heights, finished runner-up to Michigan sailor Jim Allen in the 29-team fleet. Teams led by Jim Carson, Paul Gelenitis and Michael Hnatt, Metedeconk River Yacht Club, Brick, were sixth, 12th and 19th, respectively. Dave Watts, Monmouth Boat Club, was 23rd and John Faus, Barnegat Light Yacht Club, was 28th. The Shore took three of the top four spots in the Governor's Cup division, which had 29 entries, led by winner Jon Schwartz, Monmouth Boat Club. Darryl Waskow, Surf City Yacht Club, was second and Navy sailor Joe Buczkowski, former Metedeconk River Yacht Club sailor, was fourth. The fleets were determined by four qualifying races. Carson, with crew Mary Huntsman and Russ Schon, finished seventh out of 21 entries in the Masters division, posting back-to-back 10's. Elfman's team was ninth with finishes of 16-6. Sandy Huntsman, Monmouth Boat Club, with crew Kristen Loughery and Don Brennan were 14th with 13-14. The team of Brennan, Glowacki and Wade Schon were 10th out of 12 teams in the junior division with 11-7-11-9 -- 38. |
