Boating: Bonanni heads Shore's parade of CORK honorees
Jeff Bonanni of Surf City is in the North American spotlight for the second time in less than a month.

Bonanni, who sails for Bay Head Yacht Club, beat 52 entrants to capture the Laser Radial class in the annual CORK Regatta at Kingston, Ontario, Aug. 23 to 27. Bonanni counted four firsts and two seconds in his nine-race series, and finished 1-4-4-2-2-1-1-(DNF)-1 -- 16 points for a 28-point win over clubmate Bob Kohr.

Bonanni won the Laser Radial North American championship Aug. 10 to 13 at Ridgeway, Ontario.

Finishers in the Laser Radial class included Carl Horrocks (fifth) of Lavallette Yacht Club; Reed Johnson (sixth), Kyle Kovacs (ninth) and Adam Biehler (27th), all of Toms River Yacht Club; Ryland Weber (17th), Surf City Yacht Club; Skip Paul (31st), Mantoloking Yacht Club; Matt Goetting (45th), Bay Head Yacht Club; and Aaron Freeman (46th), Atlantic Highlands.

Clay Johnson, Toms River Yacht Club, was the highest-finishing area sailor in the 64-fleet Laser Gold class, finishing fourth with 7-3-18-7-14-(18)-2-14-4 -- 69.

Also completing the regatta were Travis Weber (14th) and Spencer Weber (19th), Surf City Yacht Club; Ward Hackett (15th), Toms River Yacht Club; Streett Silvestri (38th), Little Silver, and Patrick Koar (tied for 55th), Bay Head Yacht Club.

Andrew Campbell, San Diego, a former Toms River Yacht Club sailor, was fourth.

In the Byte youth fleet, which drew 68 entries, Ashley Love, Mantoloking Yacht Club, tied for 14th and Morgan Lang, Bay Head Yacht Club, tied for 67th.

In the Byte Silver fleet, which had 38 entries, Lang was fifth; Paul Elise, Mantoloking Yacht Club, was 15th; and Love was 16th.

Area teams finishing in the Hobie 16 North Americans were Dan Kulkoski-M.B. Villa of Red Bank in fourth and Bill Wiegers-Gail Malcom of Red Bank in 24th.

Finally, Toms River Yacht Club junior sailors took the top four positions in the Optimist Ontario championship: Leigh Kempton, Todd Hawkins, Pat Curran and John Kempton. Hawkins and Leigh Kempton finished 1-2 in the Canadian Optimist championships Aug. 17.
