Toms River YC sailor wins New Jersey Optimist title

Toms River Yacht Club's Thomas Tullo earned four first-place finishes out of seven races on Monday and Tuesday to easily win the 64-boat New Jersey State Optimist Gold Fleet at the Surf City Yacht Club.

Sailors had to contend with severe wind conditions of 20-25 knots on Tuesday .
"It made for some very challenging conditions for the kids, but they all handled it extremely well," said Surf City Yacht Club's Steve Warren.

Tullo tallied eight points for the win in Manahawkin Bay to spearhead a top three Toms River Y.C. sweep. Teammates Pat Curran (20) and Todd Hawkins (21) were second and third for Toms River, which placed 11 sailors in the top-20. Jesse Kirkland of the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club was fourth (29) in the advanced fleet, and the host club's Royce Weber was fifth (41).

Tullo is the reigning North American Optimist champion. Toms River Y.C.'s Leigh Kempton, who placed seventh (44), is the reigning U.S. National Optimist champ. Connecticut's Becca Dellenbaugh, who was 14th, is the daughter of former America's Cup tactician Dave Dellenbaugh.

Ashley Van Horn of the Yacht Club of Stone Harbor won the 43-boat Silver Fleet with 27 points. Teammate Toria Harr was fourth (32) among the intermediate sailors.

Youngsters age eight to 15, compete in the Optimist Fleet, which was divided into the Gold and Silver classes. The more experienced sailors competed in the Gold and beginners to intermediates in the Silver.
