The Junior Waterfront Program at S.C.Y.C. 2008
Welcome to another great year on the waterfront. We hope you've had a good winter, but it's time to start thinking about summer. Fun days of swimming and sailing on Manahawkin Bay will be here soon. We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting new ones. We're planning a great program and hope you'll join us. The waterfront staff brings a broad base of experience to our program and has US Sailing and Red Cross certification. Many of your favorite instructors will be back. Linda Behr will run our swim program and Andy Temme will head up sailing. Cathy Bosland will run our Bay Kids program. We look forward to sharing this summer with you, your children and grandchildren.
Eligibility: The Junior Waterfront program is open to all children and grandchildren of family voting members and to all junior members. SCYC membership is necessary in order to register for the program.
Parent Orientation: A MANDATORY meeting for parents will be held in the clubhouse on Wednesday June 25th at 4:00pm. All parents who have children in the waterfront program MUST attend this essential meeting.
Schedule: The waterfront program is an eight-week program beginning June 26th and ending August 20th. There will be no sailing classes held during the Junior Commodore Regatta, the Wednesday that SCYC hosts the LBIYRA Interclub, or during the SCYC Green Fleet Regatta. In the event of severe weather, classes may be cancelled. If there is any question about the weather conditions or cancellation please call the club after 8:30 am. There are no make up classes and no refunds.

Note: A child cannot be enrolled in both Bay Kids and Opti 7 if they are seven years old.
SAILING COURSES
OPTI 7 - This course offers an introduction to sailing for 7 year olds in a very relaxed and secure atmosphere. The main focus is for sailors to become comfortable and confident while in a boat and on the water. Held Tuesday and Thursday. Students are encouraged to use their own boats but the class can accommodate up to ten children without boat. Class size is limited because of the young age of the sailors.
SAILING LEVEL I (Novice)- Introduction to basic sailing and seamanship. Students will learn a positive attitude toward sailing as well as responsibility for self, others and equipment. Students are encouraged to begin in an Optimist dingy. Other boats may be available depending on a sailors size and age. Please speak to the head sailing instructor. This class will meet three times a week. This program can accommodate a limited number of children without boats. Participants should purchase the book "Start Sailing Right" by Derrick Fries. ONLY FIRST YEAR STUDENTS CAN ENROLL IN THE SAILING PROGRAM WITHOUT A BOAT.
SAILING LEVEL II (Intermediate) - (prerequisite-level I) Focus is on improving basic skills and seamanship. Overall boat control is stressed - this includes tacking, sail trim, safety and points of sail. Racing will be introduced. STUDENTS MUST HAVE THEIR OWN BOAT, Optimist dinghy preferred. Participants should purchase the book "Start Sailing Right" by Derrick Fries. This class will meet four times a week.
SAILING LEVEL III (Advanced) - (prerequisite-level II) Designed for sailors who have acquired basic skills and are ready to start racing. Focuses on improved boat handling skills, sail control, sportsmanship and basic racing and rules. Responsibility for equipment care and maintenance are stressed. Schedule TBD.
420's (DOUBLE HANDED) I & II - Focus is on basic skills of double-handed sailing, including rigging, launching, basic maneuvering and racing. Teamwork of crew and skipper is required. A minimum combined weight of 230 lbs. is recommended for 420's. Beginner and advanced classes will be scheduled after the sailor's skills have been evaluated. It is recommended for experienced sailors and there is limited space in the beginner class using SCYC club boats. Advanced sailors will train for regattas and attend interclubs on Wednesdays. Off island regatta participation is encouraged.
INTERCLUBS - (Sponsored by the Long Beach Island Yacht Racing Association): These are weekly races involving all the sailing clubs on Long Beach Island. Each Wednesday a different yacht club hosts this event in which Optimist dinghies, Sunfish, 420's and Laser Radials are welcome to participate. All Interclub skippers must be registered. Visit the LBIYRA web site for more information. SCYC has trailers available for transportation of boats. Parents can be very helpful with Interclubs. Parent assistance is needed for getting a trailer to an Interclub at least once. This makes our attendance at interclubs possible. Also parents must be responsible for their children's transportation to and from Interclubs. Parents are asked to help out when it's SCYC's turn to host the LBIYRA interclub or a regatta by assisting with lunches, registration, or wherever possible.
SCYC - WEEKEND SERIES (Commodore and Championship Series): Junior races are held on Saturday and Sunday morning for Optimists and Sunfish. Other classes may participate but a minimum of three (3) boats is required with advanced notice to the race committee. Children must have basic knowledge of racing procedures and rules in order to participate in these races. Please check with your head sailing instructor if you'd like to participate. You must separately register for this series. We would like to encourage as many participants as possible. Club owned boats will be used for our instructional program only and may not be utilized for weekend racing.
PARENT OF THE DAY (POD) - Parents of sailors are expected to give 2 lesson periods to the program as PODs. POD's are essential to the success of our sailing program. They provide an extra hand for students and instructors, assist with minor first aid and help with communications and safety. POD's remain on shore when the sailing class is on the water to provide a radio link with the instructors. The POD will be supplied with instructions and all necessary equipment. Parents are asked to sign up for the Parent of the Day (POD) at registration and leave a $50.00 deposit. This deposit will be returned to you the once you have completed your two lesson periods as Parent of the Day.
